ASEAN, a Challenger For EU

ASEAN, a Challenger For EU

ASEAN is an intergovernmental organization, having 10 member states. In resent years, it has gained hug progress in economic and social grounds. On the other hand, EU is much more supranational intergovernmental organization, comprising 27 member states. Both ASEAN and EU states are focused to achieve regional peace and security while cooperating in trade, commerce and other areas of social life. How ASEAN can be a challenge for EU? What are the main things to improve in context of ASEAN? What is the real potential of ASEAN?

ASEAN’S Potential:

Well, ASEAN is the World’s second most progressive and potential organization after EU. It has achieved regional economic cooperation as well as regional integration. Now it has 10 members and has trade with EU as well as other great powers like China, USA. The progressive and open structure of ASEAN may attract China, Russia to be its members in near future due to region’s Geo economic and Geo strategic importance. If China and Russia becomes its members then it might be turned into a defence pact as well. In comparison with EU, ASEAN lacks in this defence domain. EU has much more potential than ASEAN because the members states have give up a part of their sovereignty to EU and EU has power to Veto any action of members. ASEAN lacks in this context but may increase its potential in near future.

Can it be a Challenge?

After careful and thorough analysis of both EU and ASEAN, one concludes that, yes ASEAN has potential to challenge EU. But, ASEAN needs to improve in certain areas i.e . inclusion of many languages, an effective legislation having power to Veto its members ‘actions, free labour, defence cooperation etc. If ASEAN overcomes its chief deficiencies, it will be a vibrant challenger for EU. But one thing should be kept in mind that ASEAN is a challenger for EU but not a threat because there is a huge difference between a challenger and a threat.

Conclusion:

In my opinion, both EU and ASEAN will remain progressive and effective in their own regional zones. EU will not be effected as much after the exclusion of UK and will remain a cohesive force to bind member states. ASEAN would need further inclusion of regional powers. Both organizations have been successful so far. After the breakout of COVID-19, the chief purpose of both organizations should be to concern Non traditional security issues.
