U.S Policy over Palestine-Israel Issue

An Israeli court ordered in October 2020 that many Palestinian inhabitants in Sheikh Jarrah, an East Jerusalem neighbourhood, would be evacuated by May 2021 and their land would be given to Jewish Israelis.

Several Palestinian families from Sheikh Jarrah filed an application against the court’s decision in February2021, sparking protests over the hearings, the ongoing legal battle over land ownership, and the call for an end to the enforced displacement of Palestinians from their homes in Jerusalem.

Palestinians began protesting the impending evictions in the streets of Jerusalem .Early in May, the protests became more violent, with Israeli police using force against protesters. On May7, after weeks of daily protests and rising tensions between protesters, Israeli settlers, and police during Ramadan, violence erupted at Jerusalem’s al-Aqsa Mosque, with Israeli police using stun grenades, rubber bullets, and water cannons in a clash with protestors that left hundreds of Palestinians injured.

Following the riots in Jerusalem’s Old City, tensions in East Jerusalem rose, worsened by the commemoration of Jerusalem Day.On May10, despite many days of fighting in Jerusalem and the use of violent and deadly force by both Israel and Hamas, a cease-fire was declared. Israel and Hamas agreed to a cease-fire on May21, which was arranged by Egypt, with both sides declaring success and no known violations.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain decided to normalise relations with Israel in the year 2020. The Abraham Accords came more than eighteen months after the US held a ministerial meeting in Warsaw, Poland, between Israel and various Arab states to discuss the future of Middle East peace. The agreements were rejected by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, as well as Hamas.

The United States has been a strong supporter of Israel since the 1960s. It has been instrumental in promoting good ties between Israel and its Arab neighbours. while also holding off hostilities from other Middle Eastern nations such as Syria and Iran. The United States’ overarching foreign policy in the Middle East revolves around Israel, and Congress has placed a premium on maintaining a close and supportive relationship with the Jewish state.

The United States has provided significant financial aid to Israel in the past, the United States’ principal source of aid to Israel now is military rather than economic. In addition to financial and military assistance, the United States gives Israel with substantial political support.

There are fears that a third intifada would emerge, turning rising tensions into huge violence. The US has a duty to ensure the security of its long time partner Israel, as well as establishing a long-term agreement among Israel and the Palestinian territories that would promote regional security.
