Hichilema had secured 2,810,757 votes against Lungu’s 1,814,201,  official results on Monday. Electoral commission chairman Justice Esau Chulu said, “I, therefore, declare the said Hakainde Hichilema to be president-elect of the Republic of Zambia”.

Hichilema is facing a huge task for the economic stability of his country. This might be the prime reason behind his victory as youth is looking forward to changing.

According to Al-Jazeera news, many of the voters were youngsters. “They say this was a protest vote, a protest for hope and a protest for change”, Al-Jazeera.

Lungu faced criticism for economic turmoil and the rising cost of living. As a result, Hichilema had the support of 10 opposition parties and formed the biggest opposition alliance in Zambia under the flag of his UPND.

Moreover, Lungu accused that violence has occurred during elections. While UPND dismissed his statement.
