Tejas Mk-1A Delivery Stalls Again: IAF’s Frustration Grows

Tejas Mk-1A Delivery

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is facing continuous disappointment as Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has once again pushed back the delivery timeline for the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas Mk-1A. Initially scheduled for February 2024 the delivery was delayed to March and later mid-2024. However, HAL failed to meet the deadline again and the first aircraft is now expected to be delivered in November.

The repeated postponement of the Tejas Mk-1A delivery has raised concerns about the IAF’s operational readiness. Vice Chief Air Marshal AP Singh recently expressed these concerns, stating, “Aatmaribharta (self-reliance) is what we are riding on… But this aatmaribharta cannot be at the cost of the nation’s defence.” His remarks underscore the critical balance between promoting domestic defense industries and ensuring the armed forces’ capability to safeguard the Indian Airspace.

Several factors have contributed to the ongoing delays. Engine supply chain disruptions, particularly related to the F404 engines from GE Aerospace, have caused a significant setback, delaying engine deliveries by approximately 10 months. Additionally, technical problems with integration of new systems including Radar and Flight control system have prolonged the development timeline. Production hurdles at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) have further hampered the overall pace of aircraft assembly.

These combined challenges have resulted in a disaster, pushing back the delivery date multiple times. The IAF’s impatience is understandable given its urgent need to replace the aging MiG-21 fleet. As the service struggles with operational challenges and lagging numbers, HAL continues to make things worse for Indian Air Force.
