Australia is set to enhance the combat readiness of its submarine fleet through a $200 million agreement with the United States to acquire additional MK-48 Heavy Weight Torpedoes. This move reinforces Australia’s strategic defense capabilities and deepens the long-standing alliance between the two nations.
Strategic Acquisition to Boost Submarine Lethality
Under the new contract, Australia will receive additional stocks of MK-48 Heavy Weight Torpedoes, designed for both anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and anti-surface warfare (ASuW). The torpedoes will be integrated into the Collins class submarines and the future fleet of nuclear-powered submarines, significantly enhancing the Royal Australian Navy’s (RAN) operational flexibility and strike capabilities.
Pat Conroy, Minister for Defence Industry and Capability Delivery, highlighted the strategic importance of the acquisition:
“The continuous joint development of the MK-48 Heavy Weight Torpedo provides the Australian Navy with the latest technology to counter current and future threats. This acquisition is a testament to Australia’s strong, long-standing alliance with the United States.”

The MK-48 torpedo program reflects a joint effort between the Australian and US governments, covering the development of both hardware and software. This partnership ensures that the Royal Australian Navy remains equipped with state-of-the-art undersea warfare technology.
The torpedoes are assembled and tested at the Torpedo Maintenance Facility in Western Australia. This facility is not only responsible for the assembly and maintenance of the torpedoes but is also certified to handle similar work for the United States Navy. This underscores the depth of cooperation between the two nations’ naval forces.
Alignment with the 2024 National Defence Strategy
Conroy emphasized that the acquisition aligns with Australia’s broader defense priorities outlined in the 2024 National Defence Strategy:
“This boost to our stocks of MK-48 Heavy Weight Torpedoes also demonstrates the Government’s commitment to deliver on priorities in the 2024 National Defence Strategy that contribute to the strategy of denial.”
