K9 User Club Poland: International Artillery Operators Gather in Krakow

K9 User Club Poland International Artillery Operators Gather in Krakow

The fourth edition of the K9 User Club Poland commenced today in Krakow, bringing together military representatives and defense industry experts from nine nations to share insights and best practices on the operation, training, and maintenance of the K9 Self-Propelled Howitzer (SPH). This three-day event, hosted by the Polish Army, runs from April 8–10, 2025.

Over 150 participants from South Korea, Poland, Norway, Finland, Estonia, Australia, and Romania are joined by observers from the United States and Sweden. The event marks the largest gathering of the K9 user community since the club’s inception in 2022.

“Poland is proud to host this esteemed gathering as the NATO nation with the largest K9 fleet,” said Col. Wojciech Dalka of the Polish Armed Forces. “It underscores our collective commitment to advancing interoperability and operational readiness.”

The K9, often referred to as “Thunder,” is the world’s most widely used 155mm/52-caliber artillery system. Its advanced “shoot and scoot” capability allows it to deliver multiple rounds accurately and rapidly reposition, providing critical battlefield mobility. With over 1,800 units currently in service across countries including South Korea, Poland, Norway, Finland, Estonia, India, and Türkiye, the K9 continues to prove its operational value. Australia, Egypt, and Romania are preparing to field their own K9 fleets.

Enhancing Interoperability and Advancing Technology

Vice President Cho Sang-hwan of Hanwha Aerospace emphasized the importance of collaboration:

“This user club reflects growing global interest in the K9 artillery system. We are committed to delivering upgrades and maintenance solutions aligned with evolving battlefield needs.”

South Korean officials also showcased advancements in automation, including concepts for manned-unmanned teaming and the integration of autonomous capabilities. Hanwha Aerospace introduced TOMMS, an AI-driven maintenance platform that offers real-time diagnostics and remote support capabilities.

The popularity of the K9 Self-Propelled Howitzer continues to grow due to its firepower, survivability, and adaptability. Future variants aim to integrate fully automated turrets, greater digitalization, and extended operational range. As such, K9 User Club Poland serves as a vital hub for allied nations to exchange knowledge and enhance their artillery doctrines around this combat-proven platform.

Hands-On Learning and Industrial Collaboration

Participants will engage in working sessions focused on four critical domains: operations, maintenance, training, and ammunition compatibility. On the final day, delegates will tour the Huta Stalowa Wola S.A. artillery plant and observe live deployments at the 18th Artillery Brigade in Nowa Deba.

Michael Coulter, President and CEO of Hanwha Global Defense, praised the Polish Armed Forces:

“We’re honored to support this initiative in Poland, a vital strategic partner and a leader in modernizing armed forces across Europe.”
