In a significant step toward modernizing its identification and communication capabilities, the U.S. Navy has awarded BAE Systems a $30 million contract to refresh the AN/APX-123A(V) Common Transponder (CXP). The system plays a critical role in air defense operations by delivering time-sensitive insights that help prevent friendly fire incidents.
This modernization initiative is aimed at enhancing the U.S. Navy fleet’s interoperability across air defense, weapon systems, air traffic control, and range instrumentation. The BAE Systems Common Transponder will support both legacy and next-generation platforms including UAVs, helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft, and naval vessels.
Future-Proofing with Open-System Architecture
The upgraded CXP is a form, fit, and function replacement for legacy Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) transponders. It is engineered to address hardware obsolescence while incorporating increased processing capacity and high-density FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) technology. The open-system design supports software-based upgrades, eliminating the costs and risks tied to traditional hardware overhauls.
Interoperability and Security at the Core
“Common transponders provide our service men and women with a reliable and secure solution to help them identify friendly forces and make decisions in a variety of threat environments,” said Seth Guanu, Combat Identification Products Program Area Director at BAE Systems.
“The level of speed, security, and accuracy matters to support interoperability across U.S. forces. This modernization effort enables us to deliver a critical capability to thousands of existing applications and equip emerging platforms.”
Strategic Impact
The BAE Systems Common Transponder upgrade aligns with the U.S. Department of Defense’s broader strategy to ensure secure, interoperable systems that can evolve with operational demands. By refreshing a foundational capability, this contract ensures the Navy and joint forces are prepared for future multi-domain engagements.
