NATO Support and Procurement Agency to Acquire AIM-9X Sidewinder Missiles

The U.S. State Department has approved a potential Foreign Military Sale to the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) for AIM-9X Sidewinder Missiles and associated equipment. The proposed deal, valued at $103.9 million, underscores Washington’s continued commitment to strengthening NATO’s collective defense capabilities.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) notified Congress of the possible sale, which covers up to 96 AIM-9X Sidewinder Block II or Block II+ tactical missiles and 12 tactical guidance units. The purchase request is being made by NSPA on behalf of Belgium, Italy, and Romania.

  • Belgium: 8 missiles
  • Italy: 24 missiles
  • Romania: 64 missiles and 12 guidance units

The package also includes missile containers, engineering support, training, logistics, and classified as well as unclassified technical documents.

Enhancing NATO Airpower

The AIM-9X Sidewinder, developed by RTX Corporation (formerly Raytheon Technologies), is a short-range, infrared-guided air-to-air missile widely used by U.S. and allied forces. This acquisition will enhance the air combat capabilities of NATO members, particularly for F-35 fighter jet fleets, enabling them to counter evolving aerial threats.

According to DSCA, the sale supports U.S. foreign policy and national security by improving the defense capabilities of NATO allies, described as “a force for political stability and economic progress in the North Atlantic region.”

Contractor and Implementation

RTX Corporation, based in Arlington, Virginia, will serve as the principal contractor. The U.S. government has confirmed no offset agreements have been defined at this stage, though they may be determined in later negotiations between the contractor and NATO partners.

Implementation of the sale is expected to be smooth, requiring minimal U.S. personnel involvement. Engineering and technical assistance may be provided temporarily, but no long-term assignments are anticipated.

Impact on Regional Balance

The sale is not expected to alter the basic military balance in the region. Instead, it will reinforce NATO’s deterrence posture and ensure readiness against current and future threats. The U.S. government also confirmed that the deal will not adversely affect U.S. defense readiness.

The total value of the transaction is based on the highest estimated quantities and costs. Final numbers may vary depending on requirements, budget approvals, and finalized contracts.
