German defense company HENSOLDT has delivered the first TRS-4D LR long-range radar system to the German Navy, marking a major step in enhancing airspace surveillance and ballistic missile defense capabilities.
HENSOLDT Completes Key Delivery for F124 Sachsen-Class Frigate Program
German sensor solutions provider HENSOLDT has successfully delivered the first TRS-4D LR long-range radar system as part of the obsolescence elimination program for the Sachsen-class F124 frigates (ObsWuF LV F124). The radar was installed at the Naval Technical School in Parow, where it will serve as a test, reference, and training facility.
The land-based system will not only support the training of operators and technicians but also allow for continuous testing and development of radar technology.
Strengthening Germany’s Airspace Surveillance Capabilities
“The installation of the first long-range sensor at the Naval Technical School in Parow is an important step in the project,” said Markus Rothmaier, Head of Naval & Ground Radars at HENSOLDT. “These radars deliver maximum performance in airspace surveillance and represent one of the most powerful radar systems ever procured in Germany. They are designed for use both on ships and in land-based applications.”
The TRS-4D LR radar system provides ballistic missile defense (BMD) capabilities to the German Armed Forces for the first time, significantly strengthening national and NATO collective defense.
Strategic Cooperation with IAI ELTA Systems
The project, launched in 2021, will see the delivery of a total of three TRS-4D LR long-range radars for the F124 frigates, in addition to the system installed in Parow. HENSOLDT is executing the program in strategic cooperation with IAI subsidiary ELTA Systems Ltd.
The radar operates in the S-band and is largely identical in design to systems used in the Hughes Air Defence Radar Successor (HADR NF) program for the German Air Force. This commonality ensures logistical efficiency, simplifies supply chains, and reduces long-term operational costs.
Expanding Role in German Defense Programs
In addition to the F124 frigate modernization, HENSOLDT has also been contracted to modernize land-based airspace surveillance under the HADR NF program. The company is responsible for manufacturing the transmitter and receiver modules in Germany, ensuring domestic supply and technological sovereignty.
The delivery of the first TRS-4D LR radar system represents a significant milestone for HENSOLDT and the German Navy, reinforcing Germany’s role in advanced radar technology and integrated air and missile defense.
