Saab Secures $46 Million Contract to Supply Giraffe 1X Radars to the U.S. Army

The U.S. Army has awarded Saab a contract valued at approximately USD 46 million for the delivery of Giraffe 1X radar systems under its ongoing security-cooperation program. The order was booked in the third quarter of 2025, with deliveries set to commence in 2026.

This contract highlights the growing global demand for Saab’s advanced radar technology, which plays a critical role in air defense and Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems (C-UAS) operations. Saab’s compact and combat-proven radar system is designed to address modern aerial threats through mobility, real-time situational awareness, and integration flexibility.

“Saab’s Giraffe 1X radars bring the U.S. Army a combat-proven capability that can be rapidly deployed to meet the growing spectrum of global threats, including unmanned aerial systems,” said Erik Smith, Head of Saab U.S. “With continuous, real-time air surveillance, Giraffe 1X ensures a decisive operational advantage for U.S. forces and their partners.”

About the Giraffe 1X Radar System

The Saab Giraffe 1X is a lightweight, high-performance 3D radar designed for multi-mission roles, including air defense, force protection, and coastal or surface surveillance. Operating in the X-band, it provides 360-degree coverage with exceptional detection accuracy and tracking of both conventional aerial targets and small, low-flying drones.

Weighing less than 300 kg, Giraffe 1X can be easily mounted on vehicles, vessels, or fixed installations, offering tactical flexibility to commanders in the field. The radar features electronic beam steering, rapid target update rates, and advanced algorithms to identify and classify multiple targets simultaneously—even in cluttered environments.

With its low power consumption, compact form factor, and plug-and-play integration, Giraffe 1X supports modern C-UAS operations and complements higher-tier air-defense assets. Its deployment capability within minutes makes it an ideal choice for both expeditionary missions and permanent installations.
