Türkiye’s leading defense technology provider, ASELSAN, has reached a major milestone in naval modernization with the successful completion of the BARBAROS-Class Frigates Mid-Life Upgrade (BARBAROS-MLU) Project. This achievement marks the world’s most comprehensive MEKO class frigate modernization, focused on upgrading the TCG ORUÇREİS with 21 advanced, indigenous systems.
The BARBAROS-MLU Project, launched by the Turkish Presidency of Defence Industries, aims to significantly enhance the operational readiness and combat effectiveness of the Turkish Naval Forces. As the main contractor, ASELSAN delivered a tailor-made combat systems integration package designed to address the specific operational needs of the Navy.
Transformational Upgrades on TCG ORUÇREİS
The modernization included the complete overhaul and integration of 21 subsystems encompassing radar, electronic warfare, communications, electro-optics, weapon and fire control, underwater sensors, and navigation. Key systems installed include the AKREP Fire Control Radar, GÖKDENİZ Close-In Weapon System, ATMACA Fire Control System, PİRİ Infrared Search and Track System, and the HIZIR Torpedo Countermeasure System.

Beyond electronics and weapons, the project involved significant redesign work such as main mast modifications, arrangement changes above and below deck, and detailed analyses for marine stability, HVAC systems, power distribution, and electromagnetic compatibility.
