Armed Drones used to drop bombs on Indian Air Base in Jammu, first of its kind attack in India

A pre-dawn drone attack targeted the Indian Air Force (IAF) Station in Jammu, located in the disputed Jammu and Kashmir region, at approximately 01:30 local time. According to Indian media reports, the incident involved armed quadcopter-type drones that dropped explosive payloads within the technical area of the base.

In an official statement, the Indian Air Force confirmed:

“Two low-intensity explosions were reported early Sunday morning in the technical area of Jammu Air Force Station. One caused minor damage to the roof of a building while the other exploded in an open area. There was no damage to any equipment. Investigation is in progress along with civil agencies.”

Indian officials stated that the drones were of commercial Indian origin, typically used for reconnaissance and aerial photography, and were reportedly modified to carry small explosive devices. One of the explosives detonated near a helicopter hangar where a Mi-17 transport helicopter was parked.

Authorities described the incident as a serious security lapse, prompting a high-level investigation into the breach of airspace security over a sensitive military installation. The attack marks the first known instance of an explosive-laden drone strike on an Indian military base, underscoring emerging challenges in counter-UAV defense and surveillance.
