Australia’s defense modernization took a major leap forward with the arrival of its first two Boeing [NYSE: BA] AH-64E Apache attack helicopters at RAAF Base Townsville, introducing one of the world’s most advanced battlefield systems to the Australian Army.
The AH-64E, renowned for its cutting-edge avionics, firepower, and networked capabilities, will significantly enhance Australia’s air-land combat integration and interoperability with allied forces such as the United States and the United Kingdom.
Boeing Highlights Long-Term Partnership and Sovereign Capability
“The delivery of the first two Australian Apaches underscores the strength of Boeing’s enduring partnership with Australia,”
said Christina Upah, Vice President of Boeing Attack Helicopter Programs.
“We are delivering the world’s most advanced attack helicopter capability—purpose-built to ensure battlefield dominance and evolve with the latest technologies for decades to come.”
Australia has ordered 29 AH-64E Apaches, with the next two aircraft expected to arrive before the end of 2025.
Local Industry and Job Creation Boost
According to Amy List, Managing Director of Boeing Defence Australia, the Apache program will generate 230 new jobs in Queensland as part of the company’s seven-year Apache Initial Support Contract.
“The aircraft arrival is a major boost to Australia’s military capability and delivers new, skilled jobs at the cutting edge of aerospace,”
List said. “Our first 36 aircraft maintenance engineer trainees and apprentices will begin training in January 2026, joining our existing CH-47F Chinook team.”
Australian Supply Chain Participation
The Australian Apache fleet incorporates several locally manufactured components, strengthening the nation’s defense industrial base.
Key contributors include:
-
Cablex – wire harnesses and electrical panels
-
Axiom Precision Manufacturing – avionics bay shelving and machined assemblies
-
Ferra Engineering – vertical spar boxes
-
Mincham Aviation – composite structures and fairings
“As the Apache program progresses, we will continue to integrate locally made components into both the Australian and global fleets, reinforcing our supply chain and enhancing sovereign skills,” List added.
Global Context
Australia becomes the 18th nation to operate the Apache, joining a network of nearly 1,300 aircraft worldwide. The AH-64E variant, featuring advanced sensors, extended range, and enhanced communications, ensures superior situational awareness and precision strike capability in complex environments.
