Colombia Signs €3.1 Billion Deal for 17 Saab Gripen E/F Fighters, Marking Its Largest Airpower Modernization in Decades

Colombia Signs €3.1 Billion Deal for 17 Saab Gripen E/F Fighters

Colombia has formally signed a contract with the Swedish defense company, Saab, for the procurement of 17 next-generation Gripen E/F fighter aircraft, marking one of the most significant defense modernization decisions in the country’s recent history. The defense agreement, valued at €3.1 billion, positions Colombia as the fourth Gripen E operator after Sweden, Brazil, and Thailand.

A Strategic Leap in Airpower

Under the contract, Saab will deliver 15 single-seat Gripen E models and two dual-seat Gripen F variants, with deliveries scheduled between 2026 and 2032. The package includes an extensive suite of associated equipment, integrated weapons, pilot and technician training, and long-term support services, ensuring Colombia can independently operate and sustain the aircraft over multiple decades.

The Gripen E/F’s advanced AESA radar, electronic warfare suite, network-centric architecture, and superior data-fusion capabilities provide a critical upgrade for the Colombian Air Force as it phases out its aging Kfir fleet. With its low operating cost and high availability rates, the Gripen is expected to significantly enhance Colombia’s air sovereignty, air defense, and tactical strike capacity.

Comprehensive Industrial & Social Offset Agreements

Alongside the aircraft contract, Saab and the Colombian Government signed two major offset agreements, outlining a wide-ranging cooperation framework designed to support Colombia’s national development objectives. These industrial and social initiatives will benefit sectors such as:

  • Aeronautics and advanced manufacturing

  • Cybersecurity and digital resilience

  • Public health technologies

  • Sustainable energy solutions

  • Water purification and environmental innovation

The offset program is expected to strengthen Colombia’s industrial base, enable technology transfer, create long-term employment opportunities, and boost local innovation ecosystems—making the Gripen acquisition a broader economic and strategic investment.

A Long-Term Strategic Partnership

Saab President and CEO Micael Johansson emphasized the transformational nature of the agreement, stating:
“I am honored that Colombia has chosen Gripen E/F to enhance its air defence capabilities and delighted to welcome Colombia into the Gripen family. This marks the beginning of a strong and long-term partnership that will strengthen Colombia’s defence and security, benefit its people, and boost the nation’s innovation power.”

The deal not only strengthens Sweden–Colombia defense relations but also increases multinational participation in the Gripen program, supporting Saab’s production lines and future research and development pathways.

Regional Impact

Colombia’s induction into the Gripen community represents a significant shift in Latin American airpower dynamics. With Brazil already operating the Gripen program domestically, Colombia’s decision may accelerate defense-industrial cooperation across the region and promote interoperability between regional air forces.
