The MoU was signed by Chris Boshoff, CEO Aerospace at Denel, and Fabio Caparica, Vice President of Contracts at Embraer Defense & Security. The potential cooperation will focus on aerostructures manufacturing, as well as maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) capabilities.

Reinforcing Defense Partnerships

“This agreement marks a new milestone in our long-standing relationship with Denel,” stated Fabio Caparica. “South Africa is currently evaluating the replacement of its legacy transport aircraft, and we’re confident the KC-390 Millennium offers unmatched operational capabilities for the continent.”

Echoing the sentiment, Chris Boshoff emphasized Denel’s readiness to support the partnership. “Denel is well-positioned to serve as a qualified industrial partner. This collaboration will boost the strategic airlift support capacity across Africa.”

KC-390 Millennium: Versatile, Powerful, and Proven

The KC-390 Millennium stands out among medium-sized military transport aircraft. It offers a 26-ton payload, top speeds of 470 knots, and the ability to operate from unpaved airstrips including soil, gravel, and compacted earth. Its multi-mission design allows it to transition between various roles such as:

• Troop and cargo transport
• Humanitarian aid and disaster relief
• Air-to-air refueling (both tanker and receiver)
• Medical evacuation
• Search and rescue
• Special operations and firefighting

Its reliability and performance have been proven in active service with the Brazilian Air Force since 2019, followed by Portugal (2023) and Hungary (2024). The KC-390 has also been acquired by South Korea, the Netherlands, Austria, the Czech Republic, and an undisclosed customer, and selected by Sweden and Slovakia to modernize their fleets.

Enhancing African Strategic Lift Capabilities

South Africa’s potential adoption of the KC-390 Millennium would significantly strengthen its strategic lift capabilities. The aircraft’s durability and mission flexibility make it a suitable platform for diverse terrain and military requirements across the African continent.
