Embraer and the Portuguese Air Force (FAP) celebrated two major program milestones this week. The delivery of the third KC-390 Millennium transport aircraft and the maiden flight of the A-29N Super Tucano marks significant progress in Portugal’s air fleet modernization.
The delivery of the third KC-390 and the launch of the A-29N flight test campaign were commemorated with a joint formation flight. This was the first time both aircraft flew together in FAP service.
KC-390 Boosts Portugal’s Operational Capability
The KC-390 Millennium is part of a six-aircraft agreement between Embraer and the Portuguese government. Options for ten more aircrafts are available for NATO allies. Known for its unmatched performance in the medium-lift category, the KC-390 offers a 26-ton payload and 470-knot cruising speed.
“Seeing both programs progressing steadily and fast gives us a sense of achievement,” said Major-General João Nogueira, KC-390 Program Director for FAP. “The delivery of the third KC-390 increases our operational capability and consolidates our experience as we move toward Full Operational Capability.”

The KC-390’s versatility includes roles such as cargo and troop transport. Morever, medevac, aerial refueling (as tanker or receiver), firefighting, and humanitarian missions are also included. Its compliance with NATO standards has attracted multiple European buyers, including Hungary, the Netherlands, Austria, and Sweden. Eleven countries in total have selected the platform.
A-29N Super Tucano Begins Test Campaign
Portugal became the launch customer for the new NATO-optimized A-29N Super Tucano variant through a 2024 order for 12 aircraft. The maiden flight initiates a comprehensive test campaign to validate performance and mission systems designed for NATO interoperability.
“The launch of the A-29N flight test campaign shows we’re on the right path to obtaining a distinctive platform with a configuration idealized by the Portuguese Air Force,” said Major-General Nogueira.

The A-29N is designed for advanced pilot training and a wide range of light attack and surveillance missions. However, with upgraded avionics and NATO-standard communications systems, it will support roles from forward air control and JTAC training to armed reconnaissance and air interdiction.
A Strengthened Defense Partnership
Bosco da Costa Junior, President and CEO of Embraer Defense & Security, noted the strategic significance of the partnership: “This delivery and joint flight represent major milestones that reflect our commitment to supporting Portugal’s defense with efficient and innovative solutions.”
The A-29 has over 600,000 flight hours logged globally and is operated by 22 air forces. Its proven reliability and adaptability continue to make it a cornerstone of light-attack and training fleets worldwide.
