Flydubai Breaks Ground on MRO Facility at Dubai South

Flydubai has officially commenced construction of its first dedicated MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul) facility at Dubai South, marking a significant milestone in the airline’s strategic growth. The multi-bay hangar, located near Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC), aims to provide Flydubai with increased maintenance control and faster turnaround times for its expanding Boeing 737 fleet.

The groundbreaking ceremony took place on July 1, symbolizing the airline’s multi-million-dollar investment into the region’s aviation infrastructure. The new Flydubai MRO facility at Dubai South is being developed in collaboration with the Mohammed Bin Rashid Aerospace Hub (MBRAH), positioning Flydubai at the heart of Dubai’s emerging aerospace ecosystem.

First announced at the Dubai Airshow 2023, the 350,000 sq. ft. facility will include advanced capabilities for line maintenance, technical services, and specialized component repairs. Scheduled for completion in Q4 2026, the hangar will support Flydubai’s growing operational demands while reinforcing its long-term vision of fleet self-sufficiency.

“This is a strategic step towards supporting our growing maintenance requirement and capacity as we take delivery of more aircraft,” said Ghaith Al Ghaith, CEO of Flydubai. “It reaffirms our long-term commitment to innovation, operational efficiency and supporting Dubai’s position as a global leader in aviation and business excellence.”

The facility comes as Dubai South undergoes a transformative $35 billion expansion of Al Maktoum International Airport. The long-term project aims to replace Dubai International Airport (DXB) with a future mega-hub capable of handling 150 million passengers annually. The first phase of the airport expansion is scheduled for completion by 2032, with a second runway and a new passenger terminal underway.

Flydubai currently operates a fleet of 28 Boeing 737-800s and over 60 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, with more than 120 Boeing 737-8 and -9 variants scheduled for delivery in the next decade. The airline is also set to expand into the widebody market with 30 Boeing 787 Dreamliners on order.

As the airline continues to scale its operations, the Flydubai MRO facility at Dubai South is expected to become a cornerstone of its infrastructure, ensuring enhanced operational efficiency, reduced outsourcing costs, and optimized fleet performance for years to come.
