French Naval Group and Indonesia Sign Letter of Intent to Advance Submarine and Frigate Cooperation

French defense company Naval Group has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with the Indonesian authorities, marking a significant step forward in their strategic defense cooperation. The agreement sets the stage for expanded collaboration in the development of Scorpène submarines and advanced frigates for the Indonesian Navy.

The LOI reflects growing trust between the two nations and builds upon earlier agreements, notably the 2021 Defense and Cooperation Agreement between France and Indonesia and the 2022 Strategic Partnership Agreement between Naval Group and Indonesia’s state-owned shipbuilder PT PAL.

“This letter of intent is a testimony to the deep trust placed in the long-standing cooperation between Naval Group, PT PAL, and the Indonesian Navy,” stated Pierre Eric Pommellet, Chairman and CEO of Naval Group. “Naval Group is honored to support Indonesia in its ambition to build a modern, sovereign, and resilient Indonesian naval industry.”

This agreement not only strengthens Indonesia’s maritime defense capabilities but also promotes its strategic autonomy and sovereign industrial base. The cooperation will focus on technology transfer, local production, and long-term partnerships to modernize Indonesia’s naval assets.
