The Greece H215 helicopter order has been finalized between the Hellenic Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection and Airbus Helicopters, marking a major step in enhancing the country’s firefighting capabilities. Under this agreement, eight H215 helicopters will be delivered—with an option for two more—following a competitive tender conducted by the Project Preparation Facility of Growthfund. This move supports the Ministry’s Aegis Programme and is co-financed by two European Union funds.
This agreement is part of the Ministry’s broader Aegis Programme, which aims to enhance the operational effectiveness of Greece’s Civil Protection forces. It is supported by two European funding mechanisms and represents the largest contract signed under the Aegis initiative to date.
GO-CO Model and Strategic Partnerships
The Greece H215 helicopter order follows a “government-owned, contractor-operated” (GO-CO) model. Airbus Helicopters will collaborate with two experienced operators—Airtelis and SAF Aerogroup—to manage the technical and operational aspects of the fleet.
According to Panagiotis Stampoulidis, Deputy CEO of Growthfund, “This contract marks a major milestone in mitigating the effects of the climate crisis. The process was completed with speed and transparency, reflecting our national commitment to preparedness.”
Combat-Proven Performance and Global Relevance
Commenting on the global relevance of the H215 in wildfire mitigation, Bruno Even, CEO of Airbus Helicopters, said, “It is an honour to support the Greece H215 helicopter order with a platform capable of delivering over four tonnes of water per drop. With its proven track record, the H215 is a vital addition to Greece’s emergency response arsenal.”
The H215 is part of the Super Puma family, with more than 1,100 helicopters delivered and over six million flight hours logged globally. The aircraft comes equipped with the advanced H225 4-axis autopilot system, enabling day and night operations with precision.
Operational Synergies and Domestic Support
SAF Aerogroup and Airtelis bring decades of experience in aerial firefighting, complex rescue missions, and emergency logistics. SAF has previously deployed H215 helicopters in Greece under the EU’s RescEU programme, while Airtelis, with roots in France’s RTE, has transitioned from utility grid support to emergency response.
This contract will also enhance domestic aviation infrastructure. The existing Super Puma fleet in the Hellenic Fire Brigade and Air Force will benefit from upgraded maintenance, technician training, and pilot instruction as part of Airbus Helicopters’ broader ecosystem support.
