The Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Air Force aviation open-day activities and the Changchun Air Show officially kicked off on Friday in Changchun, Northeast China’s Jilin Province. This year, the spotlight fell on the J-10C multirole fighter jet and the PL-15 long-range air-to-air missile, both drawing significant attention from defense analysts and visitors.
Evolution of PLA Air Force Displays
Since the first edition of the air show in 2011, where the J-10 fighter was featured in a static display, the PLA Air Force has steadily expanded its presentation of advanced platforms. In 2025, the event marked another milestone with the first static display of the fifth-generation J-20 stealth fighter, showcasing the service’s modernization and combat readiness.
Modern Combat System on Display
The PLA Air Force now highlights a fully integrated combat system centered on the J-20 stealth jet, complemented by multirole fighters such as the J-10C, along with early-warning, electronic warfare, and transport aircraft. This system underpins mission sets ranging from air superiority to land-attack and surface-strike roles, reflecting a maturing, technology-driven force structure.
J-10C and PL-15 Take Center Stage
The J-10C fighter, equipped with advanced avionics and precision engagement capabilities, was a crowd favorite at the show. Its pairing with the PL-15 long-range air-to-air missile further underscored China’s focus on beyond-visual-range combat superiority. The PL-15, considered a key asset in countering advanced adversary aircraft, has already demonstrated its effectiveness in operational scenarios. Notably, the missile reportedly showcased its performance during the May 2025 conflict involving Pakistan, reinforcing its reputation as a game-changer in aerial engagements.
Strategic Significance
By featuring the J-10C and PL-15 together, the PLA Air Force signaled its confidence in fourth-generation-plus fighters and their ability to complement stealth platforms like the J-20. The combination reflects China’s strategy of building a layered air combat system capable of deterring and, if necessary, defeating technologically advanced opponents.
The Changchun Air Show 2025 will run until September 23, offering aerial displays, weapon demonstrations, and interactive exhibits to highlight the rapid progress of China’s aerospace industry and the operational transformation of its air force.
