LOT Polish Airlines has signed a firm order with Airbus for 20 A220-100 and 20 A220-300 aircraft, marking the first time Poland’s national carrier has selected Airbus jets as part of its fleet modernization strategy. The agreement, announced at the 2025 Paris Air Show, includes an option to expand the order to a total of 84 A220 aircraft.
“Today’s decision is a strategic investment in our future. The Airbus A220 family will begin joining our fleet in 2027, opening up new opportunities for growth and network expansion — both of which are key pillars of our strategy. These advanced, fuel-efficient, and passenger-friendly aircraft will enhance our competitiveness across Europe, reinforce our leadership in Central and Eastern Europe, and prepare LOT for its future role as a key airline at the Central Communication Port,” said Michał Fijoł, CEO of LOT Polish Airlines.
Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Airbus Executive Vice President of Commercial Aircraft Sales, welcomed the development, stating:
“This order marks a historic moment as LOT Polish Airlines officially joins the Airbus family. The A220-100 and A220-300 will play a vital role in LOT’s fleet renewal and route network expansion. We look forward to a close partnership with LOT, leveraging Airbus’ global experience to ensure a smooth integration of the A220 into their operations.”
The new A220s will gradually replace LOT’s current regional fleet, offering increased efficiency and enabling the launch of new routes and destinations. The A220 is widely regarded as the most advanced aircraft in its class, capable of carrying 100 to 160 passengers on flights of up to 3,600 nautical miles (6,700 km), with the A220-100 targeting the 100–135 seat range and the A220-300 optimized for 120–160 seats.
Powered by Pratt & Whitney’s latest-generation PW1500G geared turbofan engines, the A220 delivers significant fuel savings and boasts a 50% lower noise footprint compared to previous-generation aircraft. It is also certified to operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), with Airbus aiming for full 100% SAF capability by 2030.
As of May 2025, the A220 had accumulated over 900 firm orders from more than 30 customers, with more than 415 aircraft delivered. It is currently in active service with 24 airlines, flying over 1,600 routes and serving more than 470 destinations worldwide.
