MTU Aero Engines has reached a major production milestone with the completion of its 5,000th PW1100G-JM low-pressure turbine (LPT) module at its facility in Tajęcina, Poland. The LPT is one of the most critical components of Pratt & Whitney’s GTF™ engine family, which powers the Airbus A320neo aircraft worldwide.
Silke Maurer, Chief Operating Officer of MTU Aero Engines, described the achievement as a key step forward:
“This is a significant milestone both in the ramp-up of the GTF engine program as well as for our facility MTU Aero Engines Polska. As the exclusive supplier of the PW1100G-JM LPT worldwide, MTU Aero Engines Polska is instrumental in the reliable and high-quality production of key engine components, enabling us to best support Pratt & Whitney, as well as the in-service fleet as it continues to grow.”
MTU’s Role in the GTF Engine Family
MTU Aero Engines holds an 18% stake in the PW1100G-JM program. The company develops and manufactures various stages of the high-pressure compressor, the high-speed low-pressure turbine, and brush seals. Its Munich facility assembles about one-third of all PW1100G-JM series engines.
The GTF engine family has become a cornerstone of next-generation aviation, currently powering more than 2,500 aircraft across 85 operators worldwide. Pratt & Whitney has reported over 12,000 orders and commitments for the engine family to date.
Expanding Capability in Poland
Since its establishment in 2009 near Rzeszów, MTU Aero Engines Polska has grown into a strategic hub for the group. In addition to LPT modules, the facility produces stator and rotor blades, shrouds, and provides preliminary manufacturing for components such as integrally bladed disks. It also contributes engineering expertise, including design, calculations, testing, and repair development.
Jan Florian, Managing Director of MTU Aero Engines Polska, emphasized the teamwork behind the milestone:
“The production of the 5,000th module at MTU Aero Engines Polska is not only proof of experience and quality but also the result of trust and close cooperation. Since 2015 we have consistently developed our competencies, and today’s success is the achievement of our entire team.”
Powering the Future of Flight
The PW1100G-JM LPT is vital for overall engine performance, ensuring efficiency, fuel savings, and emissions reductions. As demand for the Airbus A320neo continues to rise, MTU’s role as the exclusive global supplier of the LPT module ensures reliable scaling of production to meet growing international fleet requirements.
