PNS/M Shushuk Begins Sea Trials, Strengthening Pakistan Navy’s Maritime Deterrence

PNS/M Shushuk, the second submarine of the Hangor Class, has commenced sea trials following its successful launch at the Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Group Company Ltd at Shuangliu Base in Wuhan, China. The launching ceremony was attended by Pakistan Navy’s Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ovais Ahmed Bilgrami, who served as the Chief Guest.

Strategic Importance of PNS/M Shushuk

Vice Admiral Bilgrami highlighted the significance of the Hangor Class submarines in strengthening Pakistan’s maritime security amid the evolving geo-strategic environment. He emphasized that the submarines’ advanced weapons and sensor systems will enhance the Pakistan Navy’s ability to safeguard national interests and maintain maritime stability in the region.

“The Hangor Class submarines, equipped with state-of-the-art weapons and sensors, will play a pivotal role in maintaining the balance of power and maritime order in the region,” said Vice Admiral Bilgrami.

He also acknowledged the contribution of China Shipbuilding & Offshore International Company Ltd (CSOC) and expressed confidence in the project’s progress, underscoring that the Hangor Class Submarine Project represents a new dimension in the longstanding Pakistan-China defense partnership.

Hangor Class Submarine Project Overview

The Government of Pakistan signed an agreement with CSOC to acquire eight Hangor Class submarines during the visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to Pakistan. Under the contract, four submarines will be built in China, while the remaining four will be constructed in Pakistan at Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works Ltd (KS&EW) under a Transfer of Technology (ToT) program.

The Hangor Class submarines are designed to enhance the Pakistan Navy’s underwater warfare capabilities. They will be fitted with cutting-edge weapons and sensors, enabling them to engage targets at standoff ranges.

Specifications of the Hangor Class Submarines

The Hangor Class submarines, including PNS/M Shushuk, are based on the Chinese Type 039A/Type 041 (Yuan Class) platform. Key features include:
• Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) system, enhancing underwater endurance.
• Advanced sonar and combat management systems.
• Capability to launch both torpedoes and anti-ship missiles.
• Reduced acoustic signature for stealth operations.
• Enhanced electronic warfare and countermeasure systems.
