Thailand Confirms Gripen E/F Fighter Selection for Future Airpower

The Gripen E/F fighter selection by the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) has been officially confirmed, signaling a major step in Thailand’s long-term defense modernization plan. The announcement was made today, affirming that Swedish defense giant Saab, along with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), will now move forward with the procurement process alongside Thai authorities.

Saab and FMV to Proceed with Procurement

Although a final contract has not yet been signed, the Gripen E/F fighter selection reflects Thailand’s strategic intent to replace and upgrade its aging fleet with a next-generation multi-role fighter. The deal includes not only the aircraft but also associated equipment and support systems.

Saab’s offer comprises a comprehensive long-term offset package, which will deliver significant benefits to Thailand’s national defense, economic growth, and technological self-reliance. Details of the offset deal, which could generate new jobs and industrial opportunities, are expected to be finalized in the coming stages.

Strengthening Thai Air Defense and Strategic Independence

Micael Johansson, President and CEO of Saab, welcomed the announcement, stating:

“We welcome the Royal Thai Air Force’s selection of Gripen E/F as its future fighter and look forward to the next steps in this procurement process. Gripen E/F is the best solution to provide Thailand with independent airpower for the future, which will contribute significantly to the nation’s safety and security.”

This Gripen E/F fighter selection builds upon an established partnership—Thailand has successfully operated the Gripen C/D variant since 2011. The E/F variant offers advanced radar, electronic warfare capabilities, and superior multi-role performance, positioning Thailand as a leading airpower in Southeast Asia.
