U.S. President Donald Trump has revealed that he wants a “new and enhanced” version of the Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit stealth bomber, signaling a potential boost to America’s long-range strike capabilities. Speaking at the White House in August, Trump described the upgraded aircraft as “similar but actually quite different” from the current model but provided no technical details.
The announcement comes just weeks after Operation Midnight Hammer, the largest operational B-2 strike in history, in which the stealth bombers targeted Iranian nuclear facilities. Trump hailed the mission as “flawless,” crediting the aircraft’s ability to penetrate heavily defended airspace undetected.
No Official Confirmation from Northrop Grumman
Northrop Grumman acknowledged the president’s praise on social media, calling the B-2 “a magnificent machine,” but stopped short of confirming any new production run. The company remains focused on the B-21 Raider program, set to enter service between 2026 and 2027, which is intended to replace the B-2 in the long term.

Industry analysts note that restarting production of a bomber last built in 2000 would be a costly challenge, suggesting Trump’s comments may refer to an upgrade package rather than a brand-new variant. Potential enhancements could include improved stealth coatings, upgraded avionics, more efficient engines, and extended range.
Combat Proven in 2025
The B-2’s operational relevance was underscored in June 2025 when the U.S. Air Force redeployed bombers to Guam amid heightened Middle East tensions. The subsequent Iranian strike marked the largest combat use of the aircraft, reaffirming its role as a core component of the U.S. strategic arsenal.
Currently, 19 B-2 Spirits remain in service, each capable of delivering both nuclear and conventional precision-guided weapons over intercontinental ranges. The aircraft’s distinctive flying-wing design and radar-absorbing materials make it one of the most survivable strike platforms in the world.
Strategic and Political Context
Trump’s announcement also follows recent legislative proposals such as the “Bunker Buster Act”, which would authorize supplying Israel with B-2 bombers if Iran resumes nuclear weapons development. While the act has not yet passed, it reflects the aircraft’s enduring value for U.S. and allied deterrence.
Whether the president’s statement signals an actual procurement, a classified modernization initiative, or a political show of support for U.S. airpower, it underscores the bomber’s ongoing strategic importance. Until the B-21 Raider enters full service, the B-2 Spirit will continue to serve as the centerpiece of America’s long-range stealth strike capability.
