UK National Police Air Service Orders Seven Airbus H135 Helicopters

Airbus Helicopters has secured a contract to supply seven H135 helicopters to the UK’s National Police Air Service (NPAS) as part of its fleet renewal program. The order marks the initial phase of a long-term agreement aimed at modernizing NPAS’ operational capabilities.

The firm order stems from a Framework Contract signed with BlueLight Commercial, the procurement agency overseeing the deal. The contract confirms Airbus as the exclusive helicopter supplier for NPAS for up to six years.

“With over 100 calls for air support each day, the National Police Air Service plays a unique and valuable role in saving lives, disrupting criminality, and protecting communities. The aircraft we currently operate were transferred to NPAS from individual police forces when the national service was formed over 13 years ago. As such, they are some of the oldest and most-flown aircraft of their type in any UK fleet,” said Chief Superintendent Vicki White, NPAS Chief Operating Officer and Accountable Manager.

White added that NPAS expects to receive the first of the seven new H135 helicopters in 2027.

“We are extremely proud to have been the sole provider of NPAS’ helicopters since its formation, and we greatly appreciate the continued confidence shown by awarding Airbus Helicopters its first fleet renewal contract. It is a great honour for us to continue playing this critical role in the nation’s security,” said Richard Atack, Interim Managing Director of Airbus Helicopters in the UK.

Modernizing the NPAS Fleet

NPAS currently operates 16 H135 and four H145 helicopters from 14 locations across England and Wales, providing aerial support to 43 police forces. Airbus Helicopters in the UK also handles maintenance and support for NPAS’ fleet, which includes some of the most intensively used police helicopters in the world.

The new H135 helicopters will feature Airbus’ Helionix avionics system, designed to enhance safety and operational efficiency by reducing pilot workload. One of the new aircraft will be designated for pilot training to ensure a smooth transition to the new system.

Proven Performance of the H135

More than 1,440 H135 helicopters are currently in service worldwide, accumulating over 7.5 million flight hours with more than 320 customers globally. The H135 is widely recognized for its reliability, versatility, and low operating costs, making it a preferred choice for police and emergency services.
