India Signs Agreement for Rafale Marine Acquisition

India and France officially signed an Inter-Governmental Agreement today, allowing the Rafale Marine acquisition contract to be formalized. The agreement, signed in the presence of Dassault Aviation Chairman and CEO Éric Trappier, covers the purchase of 26 Rafale Marine aircraft for the Indian Navy.

This Rafale Marine acquisition by India follows the Indian Navy’s selection of the Rafale Marine variant in July 2023 after an international evaluation. India becomes the first country outside France to operate this advanced carrier-borne aircraft, reflecting New Delhi’s satisfaction with its performance and its commitment to strengthening naval aviation capabilities.

Strengthening India-France Strategic Ties

The Rafale Marine acquisition by India highlights the growing strategic partnership between India and France. It also underscores the recognition of Rafale Marine as a key element for enhancing national sovereignty and maritime security.

Dassault Aviation, with a history of collaboration with India dating back seven decades with the induction of the Toofany, reaffirmed its commitment to supporting India’s defense modernization. The company continues to contribute significantly to the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Skill India’ initiatives through technology transfers and local partnerships.

Enhancing Indian Naval Aviation Capabilities

With the new Rafale Marine fleet, the Indian Navy will benefit from the operational experience of the French Navy, which has been operating the aircraft for years. Along with the 36 Rafale fighters already in service with the Indian Air Force, the Rafale Marine will further strengthen India’s ability to safeguard its maritime interests.

Éric Trappier stated, “On behalf of Dassault Aviation and its partners, I would like to thank the Indian authorities for their trust and reaffirm our commitment to supporting India’s sovereign power, strategic ambitions, and vision for the future.”

The induction of the Rafale Marine into the Indian Navy is expected to significantly enhance India’s operational reach and maritime power projection capabilities.
