SOFEX 2022: Jordan successfully conducts its first-ever drone delivery and inspection flights

The first-ever drone delivery and drone inspection flights have been successfully completed in Jordan. The Jordan Defense and Development Bureau (JODDB) and Deep Element, a Jordanian company specializing in the design, development, and integration of UAS solutions carried out the test fights jointly.

The drone delivery was conducted from Jordan Armed Forces newly launched test site for unmanned aerial systems (UAS)—the first such test site in the Middle East. During the drone delivery test, a Jordanian-made fixed-wing VTOL drone successfully delivered a two-kilogram payload of medical supplies from the test site to a targeted location four kilometers away near Harraneh Castle, southwest of the Azraq Wetlands.

The delivery was successfully managed by Altitude Angel’s market leading GuardianUTM Enterprise system, a world-class UTM (unified traffic management) platform which has been implemented allowing the test area to enable safe, integrated, flight operations.  GuardianUTM Enterprise provides a ‘single source point-of-truth’ situational awareness and flight authorizations for those managing the test site airspace.

Drones have quickly become one of the most crucial and influential technologies of the 21st century, and an integral part of the world’s transportation systems. “We are witnessing not only a major shift in aviation, but the start of a new era in which low-level airspace is rapidly becoming the third dimension of transportation. These successful tests signify an important milestone for the Kingdom, demonstrating our rapid acquisition and implementation of advanced, next-generation technologies, and our regional leadership when it comes to technological innovation” said Brigadier General Dr Yousef Basha Alkhatib, the Assistant Chief of staff for planning, organization and defense resources at the Jordan Armed Forces. “Furthermore, these tests—and the launch of the UAS test site—represent a key step in the country’s efforts to integrate UAS into the national airspace,” he added.
