In a significant move to enhance its naval surveillance and attack capabilities, Indonesia has secured a deal to acquire both the renowned Bayraktar TB2 and the larger Akinci drones from Turkiye. This acquisition marks a substantial step forward in Indonesia’s defense modernization strategy.
The agreement was followed by the recent visit of Indonesian Air Force Chief of Staff, Marshal Mohammad Tonny Harjono, to Baykar Technologies in Istanbul. Impressed by the performance and capabilities of the drones, Harjono emphasized their suitability for Indonesia’s defense needs.
“The Bayraktar TB2, with its MALE capabilities and both LOS and BLOS functionalities, is a perfect fit for our surveillance and reconnaissance missions,” Harjono stated in an official press release. “We believe these drones will significantly enhance our existing air defense systems.”
The Akinci, a heavier and more advanced platform, will provide Indonesia with cutting-edge capabilities in intelligence, surveillance, and long-range strike missions. Its integration into the Indonesian Armed Forces is seen as a strategic move to enhance their overall ISR capabilities.
The delivery of the TB2 and Akinci drones is anticipated to commence within an year. This acquisition is expected to have a profound impact on Indonesia’s military operations, enabling more effective surveillance, target acquisition, and response capabilities.
With the official announcement, Indonesia has become the 35th buyer of Turk manufactured Bayraktar drones. The Bayraktar series of drones have gained global recognition for their performance in various conflict zones including the recent Russia-Ukraine war. The endurance, payload capacity, and precision strike capabilities make them formidable assets.
